A New Partnership and Momentum for Mobile Home Communities
By Liza Fleming-Ives, executive director
We're grateful to the Maine Community Foundation for producing a powerful two-minute video about the importance of resident ownership of mobile home communities—a proven tool to keep housing stable and affordable.
When mobile home communities are sold to large investor buyers, residents often face steep rent increases or displacement. This video includes the voices of community members working to protect their homes and neighborhoods.
Genesis welcomes MaineCF as a partner in our work to preserve affordable housing across Maine. During the foundation’s statewide listening tour, affordable housing emerged as a top priority in every region. MaineCF is now helping direct new resources toward preserving affordable homes that already exist in Maine.
And here's additional good news: as of late September 2025, four new laws have taken effect in Maine that together mark a turning point in preserving mobile home communities. The laws create powerful new tools for residents to protect their neighborhoods—establishing a right of first refusal, tax incentives for local ownership, and a fee charged to large investor buyers to help fund preservation efforts.
These changes prioritize the dignity and stability that a home can provide. They underscore how valuable it is to preserve affordable housing in communities across Maine.
