Expert Guidance for Long-term Success

We build capacity and make connections among community organizations, nonprofits, municipalities, local developers, and other groups.

The Genesis Fund provides low- or no-cost professional guidance to advance housing and community facility projects.

We coach and collaborate with community groups, planners, builders, service providers, municipalities, nonprofit organizations, housing committees, and property owners.

Sometimes, our guidance goes hand-in-hand with Genesis lending. Other times, we’re simply helping groups problem-solve and plan, to ensure their projects succeed.

We know what we’re good at, and thoughtful about the work we take on.

With extensive on-the-ground knowledge and experience, Genesis knows about the policies, resource gaps, and roadblocks that make different kinds of projects work—or prevent their success.

We assess project feasibility, connect projects to funding sources, and work with groups to plan and develop projects in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

We also provide leadership around specific initiatives and statewide efforts.

  • We have a national reputation as a knowledgeable technical assistance provider for rural housing preservation. In partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, Genesis facilitates ownership transfers that preserve the affordability of rental apartments.
  • We advise on the development of state programs to support affordable housing for Maine’s offshore island communities, and assist community-based island organizations in accessing funds and developing housing projects.
  • Through a partnership with MaineHousing, Maine’s housing finance agency, we provide guidance to Maine communities including municipalities, community groups, private developers, and cultural organizations that have an interest in creating affordable housing.
  • We value partnership with BIPOC-led organizations, offering guidance to advance housing and other projects that strengthen communities and help build generational prosperity.
